A la cançó “Mother”, de l’àlbum “The Wall” de Pink Floyd (del qual se’n va fer la pel·lícula del mateix nom), el protagonista, Pink, el pare del qual ha mort a la guerra, pregunta sobre les seves pors a la seva mare:
“Mother, do you think they’ll drop the bomb?” (Mare, tiraran la bomba?)
“Mother, do you think they’ll like the song?” (Mare, els agradarà la cançó?)
“Mother, do you think they’ll try to break my balls?” (Mare, provaran de trencar-me les pilotes?)
“Mother, should I build a wall?” (Mare, hauria de construir un mur?)
“Mother, should I run for president?” (Mare, hauria de presentar-me per a president?)
“Mother, will they put me in the firing line?” (Mare, em posaran a la línia de foc?)
“Mother, do you think she’s good enough, for me?” (Mare, tu creus que ella serà prou bona per a mi?)
“Mother, do you think she’s dangerous?, tell me” (Mare, digues, tu creus que ella és perillosa?)
“Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?” (Mare, ella apartarà el teu nen?)
“Oooh, Mother, will she break my heart?” (Oh!, mare, ella em trencarà el cor?)
La resposta que la cançó posa en boca de la seva mare és la següent:
“Hush now baby, baby don’t you cry” (Ara calla nen, no ploris nen)
“Mama’s gonna make all your Nightmares come true” (La mare farà que tots els teus malsons es facin realitat)
“Mama’s gonna keep you right here, under her wing” (La mare et guardarà bé sota la seva ala)
“She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing” (Ella no et deixarà volar, però potser et deixi cantar)
“Mama’s gonna keep baby cosy and warm” (La mare mantindrà el nen amanyagat i calentó)
“Of course, Mama’s gonna help build the wall” (Naturalment, la mare ajudarà a construir el mur)
“Mama’s gonna check out all your girl friends for you” (La mare farà fora totes les teves nòvies per tu)
“Mama won’t let anyone dirty get trough” (La mare no deixarà que se te n’acosti cap de dolenta–traducció una mica lliure)
“Mama’s will always find out where you’ve been” (La mare sempre esbrinarà on has estat)
“Mama’s gonna keep her baby healthy and clean” (La mare mantindrà el seu nen sa i net)
“You’ll always be a baby to me” (Tu sempre seràs el meu nen)
Tot un prototipus de mare sobreprotectora i castradora el que se’ns descriu en aquesta cançó. Podeu escoltar-la a l’àlbum “The Wall” o al vídeo següent, corresponent a una actuació a l’Earls Court de Londres el 1980:
